Subclass 462 Work and Holiday Visa 

Eligibility

This visa allows people between the ages of 18 to 30 have a holiday for an extended period of time in Australia whilst being able to work in certain industries to support their stay. Applicants are able to apply for their Second and Third Work and Holiday Visa after their first expires, subject to completing specified work. Each Work and Holiday Visa allows the applicant to stay for a period of 12 months from the date of grant. 

First Work and Holiday Visa

  • meeting the education requirements
  • not have had a visa or previous application cancelled 
  • have paid back your debt to the Australian Government (if you or your family members owe the Australian government money)
  • be between 18 and 30 years of age 
  • competent English (IELTS 4.5 ;PTE 30) 
  • letter of support from your government is needed for certain countries 
  • evidence of AUD5,000 for initial stay, in addition to your ability to pay the airfare
  • fulfil health and character requirements
  • sign the Australian values statement

Second Work and Holiday Visa

  • Whilst continuing to meet the eligibility conditions of the First Work and Holiday Visa, the applicant must have: 
  • completed 3 months of specified subclass 462 work whilst on your First Work and Holiday Visa
  • approved industries and specified work  can be found here.

Third Work and Holiday Visa 

Whilst continuing to meet the eligibility conditions of the First Work and Holiday Visa, the applicant must have: 

  • completed 6 months of specified subclass 462 work whilst on your Second Work and Holiday Visa (including the period of time spent on a bridging visa pending your Third Work and Holiday Visa grant)
  • approved industries and specified work  can be found here

Considerations

You must be offshore  when the initial application (First Work and Holiday Visa)  is made and at the time of the Department’s decision. Subsequently, you will be able to apply from onshore or offshore for the Second and Third Work and Holiday Visa. However, if you apply onshore, you must be in Australia at the time of the Departments decision. Similarly, if you apply offshore, you must be outside Australia when a decision is made. 

The visa is unique in that it allows you limited working and study rights, therefore you will have access to a broader range of experiences whilst on your holiday or work experience. 

Please note that all visas in this subclass only allow employment of up to 6 months with the same employer. 

There are multiple travel facilities for this visa, meaning that you can enter and exit Australia without restriction for the duration of each visa.

Subclass 417 Working Holiday Visa

Eligibility

This visa allows people between the ages of 18 to 30 (Canadian, French and Irish citizens from 18 to 35 years old inclusive) have a holiday for an extended period of time in Australia whilst being able to work in certain industries to support their stay. Applicants are able to apply for their Second and Third Working Holiday Visa after their first expires, subject to completing specified work. Each Work ing Holiday Visa allows the applicant to stay for a period of 12 months from the date of grant. 

First Working Holiday Visa

  • not have had a visa cancelled or a previous application refused
  • have paid back your debt to the Australian Government (if you or your family members owe the Australian Government money)be between 18 and 30 years of age 
  • evidence of AUD5,000 for initial stay, in addition to your ability to pay the airfare
  • fulfil health and character requirements
  • sign the Australian values statement

Second Working Holiday Visa

Whilst continuing to meet the eligibility conditions of the First Work and Holiday Visa, the applicant must have:

  • completed 3 months of specified subclass 417work whilst on your First Working Holiday Visa
  • approved industries and specified work  can be found here

Third Working Holiday Visa 

Whilst continuing to meet the eligibility conditions of the First Work and Holiday Visa, the applicant must have: 

  • completed 6 months of specified subclass 417 work whilst on your Second Working Holiday Visa (including the period of time spent on a bridging visa pending your Third Work and Holiday Visa grant)
  • approved industries and specified work  can be found here

Subclass 600 Visitor Visa

Eligibility

This visa allows you to visit Australia for holiday or to pay a visit to family and friends. This can sometimes be a difficult visa to obtain, as there is a strict requirement to show that the applicant is a genuine temporary entrant. 

  • be a genuine temporary entrant (you must show intentions to return to your home country – such as employment, assets and/or family) 
  • evidence of sufficient funds for your stay 
  • evidence of your purpose to visit 
  • fulfil health and character requirements
  • sign the Australian values statement

Considerations

You can be onshore or offshore when applying for this visa, and when your application is decided. 

This visa does not permit the applicant to work in Australia, undertake study or social security benefits. 

In some cases, a monetary bond to the Department is required from the applicant’s Australian citizen (or permanent resident) family member/s to show your intention to return to your home country.
